Cargill began its activities in Russia in 1991 with the opening of a representative office in Moscow, although a prior trading relationship with Russian-based organisations dates back some 30 years. Cargill Russia employs over 1,500 people – over 99 percent of whom are Russian citizens. With over US$300 million invested in the Russian agricultural and food processing sectors, Cargill is one of the leading foreign investors in Russia.Cargill has activities in the following areas in Russia:

2006 Cargill began construction of its first animal feed mill in Russia, at its existing site in Efremov. Production is due to commence in 2007 with a capacity of 250,000 metric tonnes of feed per year.
2006 Cargill entered a sugar processing joint venture with the Russian company, CSC “Russkiy Sakhar”. Cargill now has a 25 per cent shareholding in the OSC Nikiforovskiy sugar plant in the Tambov region, one of Russia’s leading beet and raw sugar processing plants.
2006 Cargill opened the first vital wheat gluten production facility in Russia at the company’s Efremov location, part of a US$60 million investment in wheat processing. With this development, Cargill is able to provide bakery customers with a domestic product that can significantly improve the quality of their baked goods and effectively reduce production costs.
2005 Cargill begins construction of its first vegetable oil refinery in Russia, at its existing complex in Efremov. The refinery will include facilities to bottle liquid oils such as sunflower, rapeseed and corn oil, and pack a full range of tropical oils and fats, such as palm and coconut. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2007 at a cost of over US$ 60 million.
2005 Cargill acquires two-grain elevators in the Krasnodar region and a river grain import/export terminal in Rostov from Rusagro. These locations allow Cargill to better serve its customers in the Mediterranean and North Africa via the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea.
2004 Cargill started the construction of two plants – a starches and sweeteners plant based on wheat and also a malt plant – at its industrial complex in Efremov. The total cost of the projects is over US$ 100 million.
2002 Cargill opened in an office in Voronezh for malting barley origination and trading in central Russia.
2002 Cargill invested US$1.5m in a joint venture called Fennolma with partner Olma Group. The company constructed a production facility to manufacture compound chocolate coatings and confectionery fillings and to supply key ice cream, bakery and confectionery producers in Russia.
1998 Cargill acquired a majority shareholding in a grain elevator in Bryukhovetskaya, in Krasnodar region, southern Russia.
1994 Cargill acquired shares in a glucose plant in Efremov, near Tula, about 330 km southeast of Moscow, and by 1995 Cargill had acquired a majority shareholding in the plant.
1993 Cargill opened a 100per cent Cargill owned company, Cargill AO, in Moscow with a branch in Krasnodar, now incorporated as Cargill Yug. This was set up to serve farmers in the Russian agricultural belt. Now Cargill Yug is one of the largest buyers of corn in the country and a significant exporter of Russian grain.
