Indonesia is the third largest producer of cocoa beans in the world, the vast majority of which is produced by smallholders. We are supporting farmers to continue the sustainable development of the cocoa industry.
We are also supporting programs and activities that deliver real benefits to the cocoa communities where we operate.
• Farmer training and support – we are providing farmers with information and advice on best farming methods, in particular on issues such as tree maintenance and post-harvesting methods to improve the quality, and value, of their cocoa. Sulawesi, the main cocoa growing region, has over 600,000 cocoa farmers and we are sharing best growing practices in the main cocoa villages of Palopo, Mamuju, Polmas, Kolaka and Soppeng. We are also providing farmers with transparent information about cocoa market prices and have also established a buying station in the region where farmers can receive the best price for their crop based on the quality of their beans.
• Supporting orphanages and elderly homes – with the participation and help of our local employees we are supporting local orphanages. We have renovated and furnished five orphanages to date, and our employees are donating money, food, school materials and their time to provide continued support to these much-needed local facilities. We have also contributed to expanding and refurbishing two houses for the elderly.
